You may know New York as the city that never sleeps, but beneath the hustle and bustle is also a city with a fascinating history and places of deep human connection. Prepare for your visit with this pre-trip talk by life-long New Yorker and anthropologist David Gassett, who will highlight must-see attractions and lesser-known local favorites.
What You'll Learn
We will begin with a brief history of New York. Starting with its origins as the homeland of the Lenape people, we will trace the city‘s growth from the small Dutch trading post of New Amsterdam, through its lesser-known revolutionary role in the colonial period, to its modern era as a destination for immigration from all over the world.
David will then recommend which of the iconic sites are worth seeing—like the Brooklyn Bridge and the Metropolitan Museum of Art—and give you a hidden historical nugget to look for at each, before sharing a few overlooked gems of the city—from a museum in a Gilded Age mansion to Green-Wood Cemetery and the neighborhood of Long Island City.
We'll finish with a discussion of what, and where, to eat for a taste of the city’s history and the real New York today. From historic deli food in the Lower East Side and Chinese food in Flushing to bagels and pizza at a local spot. You will arrive in New York with the knowledge of an insider and a long list of places to explore.
Meet Your Expert
David is a life-long New Yorker and a current PhD student at the Bard Graduate Center for Decorative Arts, Design History, and Material Culture. He holds a B.A. in Anthropology and Archaeology from Columbia University and a M.A. in Anthropology and Museum Studies from the George Washington University and the Smithsonian Institution. His academic specialities lie in indigenous art and museum history, but he also has a deep fascination and knowledge of the history of New York City, peppered with all the fun facts of a local. David has worked in a variety of New York City museums and has published internationally about museum pedagogy. When not exploring museums, he enjoys a good book, skiing, and walking around his Brooklyn neighborhood.
