Lecture Description
Tokyo, the capital of Japan, provides endless fascination for both first-time and returning travelers. Kimono-clad women still shuffle past salarymen in suits on the city's crowded streets. Hints of the country's feudal past defy the soaring skyscrapers of a "downtown" that's ever-expanding and in flux. Tokyo, a city of 13 million people, is at once centuries-old and cutting edge, staunchly traditional, and also barreling headlong into the 21st century.
Meet Your Expert
Mandy

Mandy Bartok originally hails from the US, but has lived in Japan since 2008. She has written for the travel section of the Japan Times, the nation's leading English language newspaper, and various other print and online publications. She has also worked as a travel consultant for several of Japan's regional governments and travel bureaus. Her true passion, however, is leading tours to Tokyo's undiscovered neighborhoods and teasing out the stories of the dynamic and captivating city she is fortunate to call home.

In this lecture, we'll explore some of Tokyo's top neighborhoods for travelers, while also venturing into some lesser-known, but highly recommended areas. We'll glimpse Tokyo through the seasons, and tempt our taste buds with an introduction to some truly Tokyo-based foods. We'll share stories of fishermen and famous canines, sumo wrestlers, and sakura (cherry blossom) lore.

Led by travel expert and Tokyo tour guide Mandy Bartok, this lecture will introduce you to the highlights of the vibrant city of Tokyo. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased appreciation of the unique neighborhoods, history, and food culture of Japan's unmissable capital city.

This was an excellent introduction/orientation for Tokyo Newbies! Mandy was well organized and most interesting with excellent pictures and maps - it is no small task to gallop through centuries of history and the landscape and food of a city the size of Tokyo! Thank you!
