Lecture Description
Greece, the cradle of Western civilization, is too often thought of within the bounds of its capital city and a handful of its more famous islands. In reality, there are nearly 6,000 (200 inhabited) Greek islands to traverse throughout the Mediterranean Sea – each with its own beauty, history, charm, and traditional food to unveil for curious travelers. In this online lecture, we will virtually explore 10 iconic destinations through a combination of thrilling historical narratives and a suggested itinerary bursting with extraordinary once-in-a-lifetime experiences with a locally acclaimed guide.

For travelers with a limited amount of time to enjoy the Greek islands, our Context guide to these top ten can't-miss landmarks and hidden gems is a priceless addition to any pre-travel itinerary. As we hop between these picturesque islands we will encounter the local food, art, and cultural traditions one simply must not miss while traveling.

Dimitra

Dimitra is an archaeologist with a Master's degree focused on Minoan civilization. She is originally from Athens and moved to Crete to study it's wealth of history. She has been working both as a licensed guide and archaeologist for more than 15 years. She has excavated in sites all over Greece such as Akrotiri in Santorini, the Temple of Apollo in the Cyclades, Minoan settlements & tombs around Knossos & Phaistos, a Hellenistic town and a Roman cemetery in Crete, a Neolithic setllement in Northern Greece and Geometric & Roman finds in Athens. She represented the University of Athens in a post graduate seminar in the International Olympic Academy at Olympia where she gave a lecture on the Ancient Olympic Games to students from all over the world. As a tourist guide she has been giving tours to students from schools, colleges and universities from USA, Great Britain & Australia as well as individual travelers, families & VIPs including ambassadors & the Vice-president of China. She has appeared as a specialised Minoan archaeologist in two documentaries about the Minoan civilization on Travel Channel and History Channel.

Beginning from the superstars of the Cyclades, we will explore the most famous sunset of the world in Santorini's caldera and whitewashed houses. From there we venture through the cosmopolitan ''Ibiza'' of Greece Mykonos, the most diverse and dramatic coastline of all the Greek Islands in Milos. We will stroll around the laid-back car-free streets of sophisticated Hydra. We will head west, to the Ionian islands where the Venetian influence in the local architecture goes hand in hand with the startling majesty of the coastline, where sheer, chalk-white cliffs melt into crystal-clear waters in Europe's most breathtaking beaches – Corfu and Cephalonia.

From there, we will head north, in the Sporades archipelago, in the remarkably verdant Skiathos with astonishing blue waters – a paradise for nature lovers. Together we will be transported into the past, as we wander the medieval old town nestled on the island of the Sun God Helios, Rhodes. And finally, we will immerse ourselves in the unsurpassed beauty, history, and culture of the biggest island of Greece, Crete. There will be time available to ask questions of our local expert at the presentation's conclusion.

Led by an expert on Greek culture, a licensed tourist guide, and archaeologist, this interactive lecture will explore the top 10 islands of Greece. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of what each idyllic island has to offer its first-time visitors.
