We enjoyed our Uji tour with Arina very very much. Her warmth and enthusiasm definitely brightened up the chilly day! We learned a lot about the heritage and history of tea in Uji and also visited the famous Byodo-in temple (we were particularly interested in seeing it because we have been to the replica in Hawaii). Arina was a spectacular host and so knowledgable about Japanese history, especially about the Kyoto area and about tea in particular. Her enthusiasm for tea culture was infectious, and we recommend her very highly.
We both agreed that we couldn't find a better expert about the Geisha Culture than Gavin! He did a deep dive with us and was open to all of questions and shared his personal experiences in studying and participation in the history of geisha in Kyoto. His descriptions were fascinating and we were able to spot a few geishas walking to work in the early evening. Gavin was also kind enough to get us to our dinner destination which was so helpful to us. We would definitely recommend him. Gavin, like most of the guides we engaged with Context, enhanced his tour by including his personal history as a non-Japanese learning about and integration into Japan’s culture.
This was probably our favorite of the tours and that was completely due to Preston. His charm was warm, friendly, engaging, filled with humor and a deep knowledge in sharing his insight into the Japanese culture in comparison to that of the western world. Preston was so enjoyable that we could easily imagine going to a café or restaurant with him and talking for hours. We cannot praise him enough.
