Tour Description
Step into the historic heart of Copenhagen and discover Danish royal history with the help of a Context expert. Through visits to Rosenborg and Christiansborg castles, you will learn about the historical and cultural significance of Denmark’s royal family and traditions, and have the privilege of visiting the lavish interiors of two of the most important Danish monuments. You may even pick up a macabre tale or two to tell along the way.
Experts
You will begin your journey into Danish royal history by strolling through the King’s Garden outside Rosenborg Castle. Dating back over 400 years, the verdant and meticulously maintained horticultural space is a popular recreational spot among locals.
The gardens serve as a prelude to the impressive castle interiors to follow. Here you will discover richly decorated rooms, along with intriguing stories and artifacts. You’ll also have the opportunity to admire treasures with a long-standing tradition and deep meaning for Danish culture such as the queen’s striking crown jewels, and crowns of kings past. As you wander from room to room, you will marvel at the depth of history you can experience in a short time- such as standing in the space where King Christian IV took his final breath, inspecting his blood-stained battle clothes, unwashed and intact to this day, or gazing upon a crown that was entirely remade to satisfy a petty queen.
Leaving Rosenborg behind, you will amble through Copenhagen’s charming old town, passing elegant streets and historical monuments like the iconic Round Tower. Your Context expert will illuminate the connections between the city’s royal past and its vibrant present.
Arriving at your second and final stop, Christiansborg Palace, you’ll discover how modern monarchy has aided and become an important part of Denmark’s well-developed democracy. Exploring Christiansborg’s stately interiors, including the Great Hall where the king hosts both state banquets and family celebrations, you’ll get an impressive overview of Denmark’s past 1000 years of history through a series of sprawling and colorful tapestries. You may even stand in the exact spot where each new monarch greets the people after a change in power, or learn about the history behind Denmark’s flag-the oldest national flag in the world.
You will leave your Context experience with a unique perspective on the evolution of Danish royal power and its enduring legacy, having visited two of the most impressive and memorable castles to be found in the Nordic countries.
