Lecture Description
The Vatican Museums are a treasure chest of the Pope's personal collections – absolute masterpieces from antiquity to the present day, with the lesser-known collection of Modern art that includes works of Matisse, Dalì, Chagall and more. For many visitors to the Vatican City, the Sistine Chapel is the first thing that comes to mind. This lecture will closely examine highlights of this majestic venue, such as the Sistine Chapel and Raphael Rooms, and will also provide an up-close look at many of the museums' best features, normally too crowded to linger in front of. Together, we will enjoy a grand tour of the collection's iconic masterpieces, going behind the ropes to take a view of these exquisite architectural features, paintings, and sculptures.
Meet Your Expert
Livia

Livia obtained a degree in Archaeology at the Sapienza University of Rome and has a Master's degree in the History and Conservation of Cultural Heritage from the University of Roma Tre. Her main field of interest is ancient Roman topography and early Christian architecture; however, she is an accomplished scholar whose teaching ability extends to the Renaissance and Baroque Rome. As a native Roman, Livia is very enthusiastic in sharing the deep love and knowledge she has for her hometown with clients.

Beginning from the ancient masterpieces such as the Belvedere Apollo and the statue of Augustus and Laocoon, we'll pause to consider each work's delicate craftsmanship and painstaking conservation. We will examine the great paintings and tapestries designed by Raphael, the Frescoes of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel, and move into the apartment of Julius II, which are better known as the Raphael Stanze.

Led by an expert on Ancient Roman Topography, as well as History and Conservation of the Artistic Heritage, Livia Galante, this lecture will focus on the Vatican Museums. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased comprehension of the history of the place as well as suggestions of the absolutes “must-sees” of these collections.
