Lecture Description
The Louvre houses one of the most astonishing and extensive art collections in the world, with artifacts spanning every historical period from ancient times to the 19th century. The collection is over 500 years in the making, since King Francis I began collecting and commissioning the first works of art from the likes of Italian masters Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, and is home to some of the world's most remarkable masterpieces: The Winged Victory, the Virgin of the Rocks, the Mona Lisa, to name just a few. But with a total of over 500,000 paintings, artifacts, and sculptures, there is so much more to explore -- and while not every artifact can be called a masterpiece, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of hidden treasures to be discovered. With so much to see over such a large, sprawling area, it is almost impossible to see everything, and so easy to miss out on incredible art work for lack of time. This lecture will help you navigate this massive museum to find the secret, remarkable treasures that most visitors miss.
Meet Your Expert
Sandra

Sandra is an experienced guide and art history expert, with over 15 years of guiding in both France and Italy. Originally from Canada, she moved to Europe right after her undergraduate degree and never looked back, living alternately in Paris, Rome, and Madrid. Sandra has a Master’s degree in Art History from the Université La Sorbonne in Paris, a Bachelor’s in French and Spanish Civilization, and a Master’s in Education from the University of Valencia, in Spain. She specializes in European art history from the Italian Renaissance to French Impressionism, and has a special passion for French castles of all shapes and sizes. The Louvre is one of her favourite places in the world, and discovering the art treasures tucked away in its most hidden nooks and crannies is one of her favourite pastimes. She loves to share her findings, and her passion for history, with travelers of all ages, helping visitors create incredible memories to last a lifetime.

During this lecture, we will step off the beaten path and discover some of these lesser-known, albeit remarkable, works of art by some of the world's greatest masters, spanning the three main historical periods: the Renaissance, the Baroque age, and the Rococo and Neoclassical era. Including masterworks from the French and Italian Renaissance, the Spanish and Dutch Baroque, or the French Rococo style, among others, we will explore some of the masterpieces that defined Western art history over the centuries. Dive in with us for an exciting, insider's glimpse of the world's most inspiring museum.
