Lecture Description
Salerno is often overlooked by the millions of tourists who visit the Amalfi Coast every year in favor of Positano, though it is one of Italy's most fascinating cities. Originally a Roman city that was rebuilt by the Norman kings in the Middle Ages to be an essential port for Crusaders and luxury goods between Europe and the Middle East, Salerno's history is rich and colorful. Salerno is home to the world's first medical school and the bones of Saint Matthew the Evangelist. Heavily bombed during World War II, Salerno's cathedral still bears the scars but is full of unlabeled treasures that reward in-the-know visitors.

It was absolutely fascinating, and very informative. I will watch it again before I go to Salerno in May.
There is so little really available on Salerno province and much of Southern Italy that I jumped on this talk. Salerno is ancient and at the crossroads of empire and conquest. This talk contained a little of everything. It moved along well and Danielle is knowledgeable and interesting to listen to. If you want to know about the South beyond Amalfi and Pompei, this is a good place to start!! Enthusiastically recommend!
The talk was really interesting and so well presented. Looking forward to other talks by Danielle.
