Lecture Description
Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in Europe and a place where countless diverse civilizations and cultures have left their mark. Located at the extreme end of the Iberian peninsula, the city's particular geographical position has always defined and transformed its character: a city turned to the Atlantic Ocean while maintaining its Mediterranean nature, one arm extended to Europe and the other to the distant and vast world. This lecture will trace the history and evolution of Lisbon through the ages, as we see how some neighborhoods have frozen in time while others have adopted a more cosmopolitan feel. This is the perfect opportunity for those seeking to learn about the many different facets of this wonderful Portuguese city.
Meet Your Expert
Tiago

Tiago Miranda Neiva was born and raised in Lisbon. He studied architecture in Rome and worked later in distinct offices in Portugal and Spain. For several years he was Professor of Arts and Art History, having a Master's degree in Teaching of Visual Arts. He is currently working towards a PhD focused on the Art and Architecture of al-Andalus: the confluence between the Arab, Jewish and Christian medieval world. In recent years he has been working as a tour guide in his hometown, seeking to show and reveal its most intimate secrets through an authentic and passionate local vision. He loves to read, talk and travel, and is through the contact with the diversity of the world around where he finds the particularities and answers of his own life.

Join Tiago Miranda Neiva, a native of Lisbon and an expert on architecture and art history, for an exploration of the spatial and historical organization of the city through its most relevant neighborhoods, must-see places, and monuments, as well as some lesser known aspects and hidden gems. The diversity of Lisbon's neighborhoods allow for a direct view of its rich and millenary past: from the labyrinthine Moorish and Jewish medieval streets, to the glorious monuments of the Discoveries Age period; from the cosmopolitan nineteenth-century cafes, to today’s contemporary architecture. Watch this lecture to discover why Lisbon has become one of the most awarded tourist destinations in the world.

Website is hard to navigate, the only link that works is the one in the original email. The lecture itself was a good introduction. A very slow start, with little history, other than a mere naming of the grand sweep -" first came the Romans, then Visigoths, then Moors, then Christian crusaders, age of discovery, earthquake", each attached to different hills. Very little detail, very few pictures and then only a name. Expect a very superficial overview, but fine for intro.
Very helpful in planning our upcoming trip. Thank you, Tiago!
I found this to be a good intro to Lisbon. I recommend watching it before arriving.
