Lecture Description
With museums like the Borghese, Vatican, and Capitoline, as well as countless churches and historical buildings, Rome is full of world renowned artwork. Of the artists represented in the Italian capital, one artist's work is so important and prolific throughout the city that he deserves an in-depth look: Caravaggio.
Meet Your Expert
Sara

Sara is an art historian with doctoral degrees in Medieval and Modern Art History and Classical Antiquities. She is the author of a book, published by the Accademia dei Lincei, on the antiquities collection of Pope Julius II and has written various articles in important scholarly journals on the history of Renaissance and Baroque collections. More recently, she had published a book on some of the most famous paintings of Caravaggio in Rome which introduces a new interpretation of the works, based on philological data, and which is changing the way we look at this artist. For many years, she has combined her philological research with her work as a university instructor, museum educator and professional tourist guide.

The roots of the genius of early Baroque painter, Michelangelo Merisi, better known as Caravaggio, can be found in the city of Milan. However, his indelible mark on the world of art was left in Rome, thanks to enlightened patrons who supported his talent. Following his steps, we’ll go from his first works to the manifestation of his unique talent in interpreting allegorical and religious subjects. Moving between the sacred and the profane, this lecture will discuss the deeper meaning in Caravaggio's artworks, looking beyond standard interpretations of the canvases and evaluating the reasons why these pieces are still so engaging for modern audiences.

Led by art historian, professor, and author Sara Magister, specialized on Renaissance and Baroque art, this lecture will guide visitors on a deep understanding of the twenty-one masterpieces of Caravaggio still present into the city of Rome, discovering the connections between his genius and the functions, history, and context that had helped to generate his works.

Dr Magister is a wonderful expert presenter. This is the second lecturer of hers I have seen. Both this one and the one of the mosaics of Monreale were excellent.
Caravaggio is one of the painters I most admire. I have seen almost all the Caravaggio paintings in Rome, as two trips to Rome have focused on Caravaggio. I even saw the painting on the ceiling at the Casino Ludovisi. While some of this course concerned things I was familiar with, it was very professional and provided a lot of detail.
The lecturer was extremely knowledgeable about the artist, and made a very engaging and interesting presentation. I learned so much from the course, which exceeded my expectations.
