Lecture Description
Amsterdam, the capital city of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, boasts of having a UNESCO-listed city center surrounded by circular waterways. It is well-known for its important museums such as the Rijksmuseum, the Vincent van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House, the Royal Palace, but many visitors miss the choices off the beaten track. Amsterdam is a vibrant city with lots of modern architecture, art, ballet, opera, modern music, and many places to eat, drink, and dance. In this lecture, native expert Dr. Alette Fleischer will highlight ten areas in Amsterdam to visit, and what to do while you're there.
Meet Your Expert
Alette

Alette has an MA in Art History (Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam) and holds a Ph.D. in the History of Science and Technology (University of Twente, Enschede). For both her thesis and her dissertation, she researched the intricate relationship between nature, art and science in the 20th century (thesis) and the 17th century (dissertation). Sculpture parks, ornamental gardens, and botanical gardens form the sites of study. As an independent scholar, she presents papers and writes articles on this subject. Alette also teaches art history and lectures on topics such as 17th-century Dutch art and architecture, 18th century Empire design, garden architecture, and landscape engineering. She has curated several exhibitions and stood at the basis of the exhibition Black is Beautiful on the image of black people in Dutch art history. She lives in the city where she was born: Amsterdam.

Most of the trips we will discover, you can do on foot, by bicycle, or by local transport. You'll learn about must-see museums and lesser-known sites, as well as quirky shops and art galleries, flea markets and street markets, and the hip newer area of Amsterdam North. Alette will also invite you into her neighborhood called ‘the Pipe,’ where she will give you a feel for what it's like to live like a local using examples from her own daily life. Of course, she will not forget to introduce some of her favorite shops, bars, and restaurants!

Led by Dr. Alette Fleischer, an expert on 17th-century Dutch art and culture, this pre-trip talk will introduce a variety of Amsterdam’s worthwhile museums, sites, and walks for first-time visitors and seasoned travelers. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with ideas to go both on and off the beaten path, and how to get the maximum 'Amsterdam experience' in a short span of time.

Dr. Fleischer was a wonderful local guide who brought us through Amsterdam at a very personal level. Her view of her city as a combination of touristy attractions and excellent “off the beaten track” locations gave us a perfect summary of options for either a short visit or a long tour. In particular we appreciated the way she interspersed tidbits of local best-ofs even as she took us through iconic attractions. Her closing with her own neighborhood The Pijp, featuring the open market Albert Cuyp, totally changed our view of where we thought our best options were for our trip. All in all, Dr. Fleischer made us feel as if we had a relative from Amsterdam who was calling us with ideas to make the most of our time in her city.
Thank you, Alette, for the wonderful afternoon of Amsterdam history by boat. Highly recommended.
Fabulous information, I feel bad, but the language was a bit stilted and slow.
