We begin our tour with your expert guide and driver, heading to the neighboring town of Solin to visit the Roman settlement of Salona, which dates back to the 2nd century BC. The ruins provide a glimpse into Roman antiquity and the important role Salona played within the Roman Empire; most notably as being the birthplace of Emperor Diocletian. Within the ruins, your expert guide will explain the crucial role the defensive walls, aqueducts, thermal baths, and amphitheater played during antiquity.

After visiting Salona, we may head further along the coast to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Trogir, a town renowned for its Renaissance and Baroque architecture, as well as its beautiful 13th-century basilica. When we finish strolling Trogir’s squares, promenades, and alleys, we will venture back to Split to visit Diocletian’s Palace and the Old Town. Diocletian's Palace was built in the 4th century AD for the former Roman Emperor Diocletian. The grounds are a remarkable legacy of Diocletian’s influence in Split and the region more broadly. Beginning at the south wall of the palace, our historian will explain its construction and importance for Diocletian.

After exploring the palace’s nooks and crannies, we will then reach Peristyle square. Taking a moment to appreciate its grandiosity, we then continue onto Diocletian's mausoleum within the Cathedral of Saint Domnius. It is here where our guide will explain the significance of the Cathedral, which continues as one of the oldest continually used cathedrals globally. After visiting Diocletian’s Palace, we continue past the Golden Gate on the north side of the Palace and onto Split’s Old Town. By the end of the tour, as we trace through Split’s Old Town, we will finish with a greater sense of the importance of the Roman legacy in Split, its surrounding area, and its ongoing legacy in Croatia today.
