Beginning January 8, 2025, travelers from visa-exempt countries, including the United States, will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before visiting the United Kingdom. This new requirement applies to all travelers, regardless of age, and aims to enhance border security while streamlining the entry process.
The ETA is a digital authorization linked to your passport, granting permission to travel to the U.K. (made up England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) for short stays of up to six months for purposes such as tourism, business, or short-term study. It is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and allows multiple entries during its validity period.
Beginning on November 27, 2024, travelers from the United States and the following countries will need to apply for an ETA for U.K. travel that begins on January 8, 2025 or later. All travelers will need to apply for an ETA, regardless of age.
If any of the following apply to you, you will not need an ETA:
Applications for the ETA open on November 27, 2024, for travel commencing January 8, 2025.
To apply:
Most ETA applications are processed within three business days. Apply well in advance of your planned travel to accommodate any unforeseen delays.
As you plan your visit to the U.K. in 2025, ensure you secure your ETA in advance to enjoy a seamless travel experience. You can always find ind up-to-date information on the UK government site.
