A two-day immersion in Rome
Our resources in this city are considerable. With over 60 scholars in archaeology, art, and other disciplines, we've crafted a 2½-day investigation of Rome's millennia through the lenses of art, archaeology, history, and food. After an initial day of introductory chats and overview walks, we will immerse ourselves in ancient Rome and a series of seminars on archaeology and classical society. We'll visit the Colosseum and Trajan's Forum, but also explore the city's late antique churches and medieval cloisters.
We'll then turn our attention to papal Rome and discuss the far-reaching changes that gripped the city during the Renaissance and Baroque ages. In the morning, we might also take a look at the private collection of the Borghese family as we paint a portrait of power and patronage in the 16th and 17th centuries. In the afternoon, we will cover the dense complex of the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica, tracing the multi-layered story that these structures represent.
We'll eat well, too, enjoying a walk through one of the city's historic food markets, a seminar on Italian wines and a celebratory farewell meal in one of the city's most characteristic trattorie (small restaurants) rounding out our experience of Rome by educating our bellies as much as our minds.
* This trip can also be booked privately upon request for parties of people traveling together. The cost of this is €1690 for the group plus €80 per person. Simply contact us by email if you would like to place a request.
