We really enjoyed our tour of the fish market with John. He was knowledgeable, fun and we tasted some of the best seafood we’ve ever had. Highly recommended.

Learnt so much about Tokyo, Hakone and Japan in general. Wonderful perspective!

Our food tour with Yoko Inagaki was an amazing experience! Yoko was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and extremely knowledgeable. She taught us so much about Japanese food, traditions, and culture, making the tour both fun and educational. She also went above and beyond by texting us the day before to confirm our tour and letting us know she was available if we had any questions. That personal touch was greatly appreciated. We will absolutely book this tour again the next time we’re in Osaka, and we hope we’re lucky enough to have Yoko as our guide again. Highly recommend!

Japan Tours

Japan is a country where the smallest details often carry the deepest meaning. A shrine gate marks the boundary between the everyday and the sacred. A bowl of ramen reflects regional history. A quiet garden reveals centuries of philosophy, design, and craftsmanship. Without context, it's easy to admire these places without fully understanding them. Context Travel offers expert-led Japan tours in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Kanazawa, helping curious travelers connect famous landmarks to the stories behind them. Led by historians, architects, art historians, culinary experts, and local scholars, our private tours, small group experiences, and audio guides uncover the history, traditions, and cultural ideas that continue to shape Japan today.

The best Japan tours depend on the experience you're looking for.

Tokyo is ideal for travelers interested in contemporary Japan, museums, food, neighborhoods, and urban culture. Kyoto offers temples, gardens, tea traditions, and the country's imperial legacy. Osaka is known for its vibrant food scene and merchant history, while Hiroshima provides a thoughtful understanding of World War II, peace, and resilience. Kanazawa offers a slower-paced experience, with beautifully preserved samurai and geisha districts, traditional crafts, and one of Japan's finest landscape gardens.

Context Travel offers guided walking tours, food tours, museum experiences, family tours, and day trips that help travelers move beyond sightseeing to understand the history and culture that shaped each destination.
Japan rewards both first-time visitors and those returning to explore beyond the country's best-known sights.

Many travelers begin with Tokyo and Kyoto, adding Osaka for its food culture and Hiroshima for its historical significance. Kanazawa has become increasingly popular for travelers seeking traditional neighborhoods without the crowds of larger cities.

Beyond Context's destinations, many visitors include Nara for its temples and deer park, Hakone for hot springs and views of Mount Fuji, Nikko for its elaborate shrines, Kamakura for its samurai history, and the Japanese Alps for mountain scenery and historic villages.

Rather than trying to see the entire country in one visit, many travelers find it more rewarding to explore one region in greater depth.
Often, yes.

Japan is remarkably accessible for independent travel, but many of its most meaningful experiences rely on cultural knowledge that isn't immediately obvious. Temples, shrines, gardens, castles, neighborhoods, and even everyday customs reveal far more when their history and symbolism are explained by an expert.

Guided tours are especially valuable at places such as Kyoto's temple complexes, Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park, Tokyo's museums, Kanazawa's preserved districts, and Osaka's food neighborhoods, where local insight transforms what you see into a richer understanding of Japanese history and culture.
Japan offers countless guided tours, but many focus primarily on moving efficiently between major attractions.

Context Travel takes a different approach. Our tours are led by historians, architects, archaeologists, culinary experts, art historians, and local scholars who encourage discussion, answer questions, and connect individual sites to the broader story of Japan.

Whether you're exploring Kyoto's temples, learning about Edo-period Tokyo, discovering Osaka through its food culture, or reflecting on Hiroshima's modern history, our goal is to help you leave with a deeper understanding of the places you've visited.

Choose from private tours tailored to your interests, small group experiences with no more than ten guests, or audio guides that let you explore at your own pace.

What are the best tours in Japan?

Some of the most rewarding tours explore Japan's history, food, architecture, and cultural traditions. Walking tours, museum tours, food experiences, and day trips often provide a deeper understanding than sightseeing alone. Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Kanazawa each offer a different perspective on Japan's past and present.

How many days should you spend in Japan?

Many first-time visitors spend 10 to 14 days in Japan, allowing enough time to experience several cities without rushing. A classic itinerary often combines Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, with optional additions such as Hiroshima, Kanazawa, Hakone, or Nara.

What is the best itinerary for first-time visitors to Japan?

A popular first itinerary is Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka, with day trips to Nara or Hakone. Travelers with more time often add Hiroshima and Kanazawa for a broader understanding of Japan's regional history and culture.

Is Kyoto or Tokyo better?

Neither is better—they offer different experiences. Tokyo showcases contemporary Japan, innovation, neighborhoods, museums, and global culture, while Kyoto preserves many of the country's most important temples, gardens, and traditional arts. Most travelers find the two cities complement one another.

Are private tours worth it in Japan?

Private tours are especially valuable for travelers who want flexibility and the opportunity to explore subjects in greater depth. They allow more time for questions, can be tailored to individual interests, and often uncover details that are easy to overlook when visiting independently.

What is the best time to visit Japan?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) are the most popular seasons thanks to cherry blossoms and autumn foliage. Summer brings festivals and lively city events, while winter offers fewer crowds, excellent skiing in northern Japan, and clear views of iconic landscapes such as Mount Fuji.

Which city is best for Japanese food?

Osaka is widely considered Japan's culinary capital, famous for dishes such as takoyaki and okonomiyaki. Tokyo offers one of the world's most diverse dining scenes, while Kyoto is known for refined kaiseki cuisine, tea culture, and centuries-old culinary traditions.
