We spent an absolutely fabulous afternoon with Henk exploring the Jewish Quarter in Amsterdam. Henk’s knowledge of the history and current environment in the area combined with personal stories of his family expanded our understanding and enhanced our appreciation for the challenges, strength, and resilience of the Jewish community. A walk through the neighborhood led to a small park with a beautiful “Never Forget Auschwitz Memorial” which we would not have found by ourselves. A must-see! The film and memorial at the Dutch Theater, the gorgeous Portuguese Synagogue with the Ets Hiam Library and magnificent torahs, and the Holocaust Wall of Names were all highlights of the tour. Many thanks to Henk for sharing his expertise with us!

Don’t just take our word for it
We were quite happy to our new friend Sabry for our Jewish history tour. Sabry walked us through what remains of the Jewish quarter of Amsterdam and explained how significant the Jewish population was in Amsterdam. Unfortunately, that sizable population was decimated by WWII. The visit to the Portuguese Synagogue and the Jewish Historical Museum helped us understand the history, the vibrant culture and the importance of the Jewish population in Amsterdam.
Excellent experience. Ah, Amsterdam in January. It started to snow, but Henk guided us to a warm dry cafe and continued with the stories and narrative that made our tour so interesting. A somber but powerful day; highly recommend.
